Chapter Seven

“Ah-choo!” Aili covered her face, the force of the sneeze rocking through her entire body. She clenched her eyes and pulled a tissue from the box on her desk. Her head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, the pressure behind her eyes telling her to whine with the best toddlers around.

She hated being sick.

And she was definitely sick.

Blowing her nose, Aili squinted at the screen in front of her. She had to get the schedule for the next week done. Jess had offered, again, but Aili had resisted, especially after the conversation they’d had the other day. Jess’s disbelief and lack of trust in Aili made her hesitate. It was a vicious cycle that Aili had gone through before with other assistant directors. Jess had lasted longer than any of them. It was about time that Aili had issues with her, but she really didn’t want there to be any.

Groaning, Aili pulled up the schedule, trying to figure out how to fix it now that two more teachers had called out sick. She wasn’t ever going to be able to catch up at this rate, and she was going to be stuck in a classroom most likely in order to fill in some of the gaps. Her back ached. She couldn’t be running a fever, could she?

“You look like hell warmed over.” Birch wasn’t quiet. She stood by the door, an eyebrow raised, and a purse to her lips that told Aili exactly what she was thinking.

Aili shouldn’t be there. Everyone knew that, but she didn’t exactly have a choice right then, now did she? “Yeah, well, it sucks to be the boss sometimes.”

She was waiting for the medicine she’d taken to start kicking in and the energy from the third cup of coffee that morning. It would hit roughly at the same time, and then she’d be golden for the rest of the day, so long as she kept up on everything.

“Leah’s sick,” Birch frowned. “And I need two people because I have enough kids in.”

“Who’s with them now?” Aili’s eyes widened, suddenly realizing just how out of control the day was.

“Jess.”

Aili pursed her lips. “And she can’t stay with you because she’s supposed to be with the babies.”

She wanted to curse and rant and throw a full-blown tantrum. She was going to need to call in extra hands from wherever she could come up with them. It had been a long time since a cold had gone through the daycare like this, especially one in the middle of the summer.

Aili stared at the schedule, having to refocus her eyes twice to be able to see it. No one could work in Birch’s classroom. No one but herself, which meant she was doing exactly what Jess had warned her against.

Favoritism.

The word ricocheted around her brain, rattling all those loose cogs she didn’t want to admit were there. “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

“You should be going home.”

“Not an option.” Aili turned back to her computer, making a few adjustments on the schedule.
